TerraLogos in the Community
The Great Halloween Lantern Parade 2009
One of our favorite community events is the annual Halloween Lantern Parade in Patterson Park, put together by the awesome Creative Alliance and Nana Projects. Throughout October, Highlandtown’s Creative Alliance hosts workshops where kids (of all ages) create paper lanterns (of all shapes and sizes!) Stilt walkers, elaborate costumes and traveling musicians add to the magical sight of the glowing lanterns snaking along the darkened paths of the park. It is a wonderful spectacle, and this year we decided to join our neighbors in the fun.
The theme of this year’s parade was Edgar Allen Poe’s “Eureka: A Prose Poem.” It’s a pretty cryptic piece, but allows for a lot of creativity! Undaunted, “Team TerraLogos” and friends gathered in our office for an arts and crafts session. Things got a little silly, and by the time we headed out to Patterson Park we all had day-glo goldfish-shaped hats and carried fishbowl-shaped lanterns. We were the “Goldfish Liberation Brigade” and cut-outs of people swam among the tissue algae in our candle-lit humaniquariums.
Our community is so rich in creativity. We saw lanterns- sculptures, really- that were just flat-out fantastic. The volunteers have the most charming pagoda-shaped hats aglow on their heads. Kids are decked out for Halloween march proudly with their handmade lanterns. You’ll see what we mean when you check out the website:http://nanaprojects.com/thegreathalloweenlanternparade.html.
Or even better, we will see you at the Lantern Parade next year. We’re all going to take the stilt walking workshops, so look up for us!
