Energy Tip

Top Ten Tips for Heating Your Home, from Bion Howard’s web site http://www.energybuilder.com/

“Tip #2 - Install (a) set-back digital (programmable) thermostat on your heating system or heat pump. Every degree of set “back” for heating may save up to 8% on central heating energy usage.” (Bion’s #1 Tip - “Obtain an energy audit…”)

What We Do: Tools of the PLUS Inspection

We use the latest building science tools to obtain a more detailed analysis of the issues in your home. With these tools we can identify the specific conditions that have the most impact on your home’s performance. In addition, infrared thermometers, combustion gas detectors, air velocity meters, circuit testers and other diagnostic tools are available when needed for special situations.

Blower Door Infiltration Test measures and identifies the air leaks that allow surprisingly large amounts of air to escape from your home – air which you have already paid to heat or cool. In most homes, hidden leaks around the chimneys, pipe chases, and structural connections to attics and basements account for more loss of conditioned air than windows and doors. The Blower Door enables us to calculate the air leakage and identify specific gaps, holes, seams and cracks that need to be sealed for improved energy performance. For the majority of single family homes, air sealing is often the single most effective step you can take to stop energy loss and to start saving dollars.

Infrared Camera Inspection takes thermal images of your home showing temperature differences and reveals a variety of problems including missing insulation, hidden cold air pathways and moisture issues. Since warm air flows toward cold air, this is a graphic depiction of the degree differential and easily detects your highest thermal gaps which need to be sealed, insulated or blocked.

The thermal image from the IR Camera shows cold air in blue as it leaks from a speaker hidden behind a wall hanging

Used together, the Blower Door and Infrared Camera effectively identify your most critical conditions, directing us to the best, most cost effective opportunities for improvement.
